Free Boiler Scheme
Did you know that the cost of a new or replacement boiler ranges from £1,000 to £7,000? The cost could be higher depending on the boiler model and the work that should be done. Fortunately, eligible households can save money by applying for boiler installation and replacement under the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) program. This is a free boiler scheme that allows eligible homeowners and private tenants to get a boiler or replace an old one at no cost.
The ECO scheme was launched in 2013. It was intended to make sure that the UK’s leading energy suppliers do their part in helping households to limit their carbon emissions and reduce fuel poverty. The free boiler scheme is available in Wales, England, and Scotland. It is funded by the top energy companies in partnership with the UK government.
Eligibility for under the Free Boiler Scheme
Securing funding under the free boiler scheme is subject to specific criteria and availability of funds. Your preferred energy supplier can provide insight into your eligibility status. If you are a tenant and you want to get the free boiler, you should either own your home or obtain permission from your landlord to proceed with the scheme.
Generally, you may qualify for assistance under ECO if you receive the warm home discount or certain other qualifying benefits. Some of these income-related benefits include pension credits, universal credits, child tax credits, and more. Also, people who reside in social housing with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of E or lower may be eligible for a free boiler.
In addition to these income-related benefits, your existing boiler must be 17 years or older to be eligible for a free boiler. Note that the current free boiler scheme excludes newer boilers (less than 17 years old). This is because it’s more cost-effective to repair the current boiler than to get it replaced.
