Most homes and commercial properties built between 1925 and 1982 have a cavity between two brick lawyers. This cavity wasn’t filled with an insulation material when the property was being built. The Building Regulations changed in 1982 and required efficient insulation to be fitted within the cavity at the time of construction.
Unfortunately, not all properties were fitted with insulated cavities. And this is why the UK government is pushing for proper cavity wall insulation. It does so by partnering with the leading energy companies to provide cavity wall insulation grants. This partnership is known as the Energy Company Obligation (ECO).

Eligibility for Cavity Walls Insulation Grants
In most cases, funding for cavity wall insulation projects comes from the UK government’s energy efficiency programmes. These schemes aim at helping households that are vulnerable to fuel poverty to improve the energy efficiency of their homes and reduce the national overall carbon footprint.
Currently, the ECO scheme is in its fourth iteration (ECO4). Eligibility under this recent phase is different from ECO3. This is because eligibility for cavity wall insulation grants isn’t based on receiving qualifying benefits. Instead, it’s more related to household income. This ensures households that don’t receive some benefits but have a low income can still benefit from the scheme.
For example, there are households with £31,000 income or less but their properties have an energy performance certificate bands of A, B, and C. These households cannot get cavity wall insulation grants because their properties are more energy efficient. However, homes with EPC bands D-G or E-G may be eligible.
